See the links at the bottom of this page for more information about the history of Reiki and the words & phrases associated with it.
Reiki (pronounced Ray - Key) is a combination of two Japanese words. The first part "Rei" means "universal" and the "ki" means "life-energy". "Ki", referring to life energy, appears in many Japanese words, such as AiKiDo;

It also appears (spelled "Chi") in Chinese terms such as T'ai Chi and Chi Gung.

Reiki - Universal Life Energy

At the end of the 19th Century, a Japanese gentleman called Mikao Usui developed a method of connecting to this energy, which is used primarily for the wellbeing of the self, but can also be transferred to others. When a person's life energy is low, they become susceptible to illness, depression and stress. An imbalance of the body's energy can lead to discomfort and distress. A Reiki treatment is a non intrusive, hands on, form of natural healing whereby energy is channelled, or flows, through the practitioner to the recipient. In this way, Reiki helps to restore and maintain the essential natural balance of life energy in the body.

When used for healing in this way, Reiki is a safe, natural and holistic way of treating many acute and chronic conditions and brings about spiritual, mental and emotional wellbeing.

Benefits that can be brought about through Reiki treatments include:

There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed.

Today, Reiki continues to be taught by Reiki Masters who have trained in the tradition passed down from Master to student.
